“Aparecida: Pastoral Connection of Latin America

with Hispanic Ministry in the United States”

Keynote Speaker: Father Mateo Garr, S. J. is from Louisville, Kentucky, but he has lived most of his life in the country of Peru. He has Masters in Cultural Anthropology and in Theology; he was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1975. Since then he served at a rural parish in the Peruvian Andes, a community frequently affected by terrorism during the eighties. From 1990 until last year he was the adjunct executive secretary for the Episcopal Commission for Social Action (CEAS) that is the commission for peace and justice in the Episcopal Conference of Peru. He has mostly dedicated to work for human rights and the Social Doctrine of the Church. He has specialized in writing “popular versions” of the documents on Social Doctrine of the Church so that the ecclesial base communities can work with them. During this year he is on sabbatical at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.
